Ms Colette Dutot
I have been teaching music for over 20 years after qualifying in 1996. I have loved working across different schools in the UK in music specialist and music leadership roles; running departments, training teachers and setting up new music education projects. I love everything about Music Education and have enjoyed learning from and being inspired by some of the best music educators in the world.
I am passionate about creating a learning environment where everyone flourishes, takes creative risk and discovers themselves as a musician by combining fun and excellence. I am really excited about how my expertise, experience and philosophy will help craft a visionary and vibrant music department for students at BSL.
I play the piano, clarinet and saxophone and Jazz is one of my passions. I absolutely love to improvise and compose Music, though sometimes just playing a piece by Bach or a beautiful Chopin Nocturne is a true pleasure. Some of my recent highlights from my work in the UK include being part of the team that took 800 children to perform at the Royal Albert Hall (Music for Youth Proms), leading on an amazing young person’s music festival that gave young artists the chance to work with top music professionals, training teachers for the First Thing Music (Early Years research programme), winning the Will Michael Jazz Award for Sheffield’s Jazz Vision, and being a featured British Female Composer for a Google Arts & Culture Exhibition in collaboration with the British Music Collection.
My favourite quote is: “Jazz is not just music, it’s a way of life, it’s a way of being, it’s a way of thinking” – Nina Simone.
I grew up in the Channel Islands and have always loved swimming, surfing, cooking and dancing. In moving to Lisbon, I’m looking forward to reconnecting with the ocean, meeting new musicians and hearing some Fado! Our family (my husband and our little Boston Terrier dog) is looking forward to running on the beach, swimming in the sea, taking lots of photographs of beautiful Lisbon and watching those perfect Portuguese sunsets over the sea.
What the students say about me
“Hello Colette, you’re the singing queen” (as I walked into a Year 1 classroom)
“In one word – BRILLIANT!” (Parent of young performer)
“There was magic in the air, thanks so much for leading such an epic event” (Head of Sheffield Music Hub).
