STAFF PROFILE - PORTUGUESE TEACHER

Cristina Almeida-Urwin

“A LANGUAGE CAN BE LEARNT MOST EFFICIENTLY WHEN STUDENTS ARE HIGHLY MOTIVATED”

After moving to the UK whilst working for a multinational company, I began volunteer work with children. This was the trigger for my career change and I started working full time in a primary school in the Northeast of England whilst also running my After-School language clubs in the same school.

Since qualifying as a teacher at Durham University (UK), I have also completed a Master of Arts in Education degree whilst teaching Modern Foreign Languages at secondary school, preparing students for their GCSE and A-Level exams.

I have taught languages to a range of levels, from Early Years to adults wanting to develop their language proficiency. I am a firm believer that languages open doors, and I am an enthusiast for learning and passing on to children this curiosity for life, for everyday learning, and knowing different cultures, which continuously drives me too.

ABOUT MS ALMEIDA

As a Scout (and later on as a Scouts leader), I have always loved walking, exploring and making sure I give a positive contribution to society, wherever I am living. I often volunteer for the community, and I have been a Silverline/Age UK telephone friend with an elderly person for the past 6 years (and many more to come!). I also love dancing the Argentinean tango and I have run the Great North Run (half-marathon) in the UK five times, for different charities.

Coming back to Portugal after nearly 20 years in the UK, brings an enormous smile to my soul. I feel very privileged to share with young students the wonderful language Portuguese is, passing on the culture and enthusiasm that comes with it, whilst fully understanding the British Curriculum and its demands all the way to A-Levels.
