BSL SCIENCE WEEK
Children are naturally curious and during our recent BSL Science week we wanted to nurture this curiosity. As well as helping children understand the world around them, experiences in science help children to develop critical thinking, effective communication, collaboration and creativity. Posing the question, ‘What is a scientist?’ at the beginning of our science week, we wanted to broaden our students’ perceptions of what it means to be a scientist and open their eyes to the world of science and all the possibilities it holds.
To launch the week, we were privileged to welcome acclaimed scientist, speaker and author of Secrets of Superhero Science, Dr Barry Fitzgerald into school. Dr Fitzgerald gave an inspiring presentation on superhero-related and superhero-inspired innovations. His talk and visuals were pitched perfectly for our students and they were enthralled to learn about his research in this field.
As well as activities throughout the school, our students attended the Festival International de Ciencia (FICA) which was held in the majestic setting of the Palácio de Marquês de Pombal in Oeiras. This event was the first of its kind in Portugal and provided a vast range of practical experiences for all ages. From geology and physics to sports science and robotics, the children were able to experience hands-on the breadth of what science has to offer.
It was wonderful at the end of the week when asked the question ‘What is a scientist?’ to have one of our of younger students respond, ‘We are all scientists!’
